Amarillo is a city in the northwest of Texas, in the United States. It sits on high, windy plains and grew as a place of cattle, oil, and minerals; people still know it for ranch work, for rodeo, and for that dry industrial energy. English speakers usually say it am-uh-RILL-oh, not with a Spanish beat. Though the name is a Spanish word for “yellow,” in English Amarillo is a place-name, not a colour you can use in a sentence. on the old Route 66 often remember it; students will meet it in American news, maps, and songs more than in everyday British English.
