    Alternation is the pattern of taking turns: A, then B, then A, then B, again and again. If two things alternate, or if you alternate them, they happen one after the other in that repeated order — day and night, work and rest, two teams sharing a court. The word is a little formal; in easy speech people often say they take turns or they go one after the other. Though actually, it is not mixing things at random, and it is not choosing a different option. That second idea is alternative, a neighbour word that students often mix with this one. Alternation names the back-and-forth pattern itself.
