An Alsatian is a large, strong dog — the same breed many people call a German shepherd. Police and army units often use them, and people keep them to guard houses and yards. Alsatian is mainly British; American English almost always says German shepherd. The name comes from Alsace, a region on the French–German border; after a war, some British speakers preferred a name that did not say “German.” Older British speakers still use Alsatian more; younger ones often say German shepherd too. In Taiwan you will hear the Chinese name far more than either English name.
