Something alphanumeric uses letters and numbers together — A to Z and 0 to 9. Password boxes, serial codes, and some licence plates are alphanumeric: a form may ask for at least eight alphanumeric characters. In careful use it does not include or symbols such as @, #, or a space, though people stretch it. You meet it mainly on computers, forms, and in offices, not at the dinner table. It is usually an adjective (an alphanumeric code). People also use it as a noun for one of those characters, a letter or a digit.
