An almond is a flat, pale nut with a thin brown skin and a sweet taste. We also use the same word for the tree that grows these nuts. You eat them roasted, find them in cakes and chocolate, and can make a white drink from them. Though actually there is a bitter kind too, used only in tiny amounts for flavour or medicine — that is not a snack. Almond as a colour is a light tan, like the inside of the nut. The word is ordinary kitchen English, not a formal or scientific one, though doctors the old Latin cousin of this word for an almond-shaped part of the brain.
杏仁(台灣零食說杏仁;大陸有時稱巴旦木。中藥的南北杏較苦,不是同一種零食用堅果)
組成From Ancient Greek amugdálē, then Latin amygdala, Vulgar Latin, Old French almande / amande, then Middle English. The Greek origin is uncertain. The al- at the start was influenced by the Arabic word for “the”, which is why it looks a little like other old Arabic borrowings.
