    Almaty is a large city in the southeast of Kazakhstan. From 1929 to 1997 it was the country’s capital; since 1997 the capital has been , farther north. Before that, the same town was called Vernoye, Verny, or Vernyi. People still treat Almaty as the biggest city and a main centre of business and culture, even though it is no longer the capital — so “the capital of Kazakhstan” is a trap. In English we say Almaty; older books may print Alma-Ata, the Russian form of the name. It is a place name, so it takes a capital letter.
