An almanac is a book that comes out once a year and is packed with facts for that year: dates, sunrise and moon times, weather notes, sports scores, names of winners, and other useful lists. Farmers once kept one so they knew when to plant; sailors used one for tides and the sky. A sports almanac is still a common thing — a fat yearly book of records. People also stretch the word a little: any yearly handbook of facts may be called an almanac, even if it now lives on a phone. The word itself feels a bit old and , though actually the books have not gone away. It is more serious than a calendar, and much fatter than a diary.
組成Not a split of English pieces. From Arabic al-munāḵ, “climate”, through Andalusian Arabic and Medieval Latin, then Old French almanach, then Middle English. The al- at the front is the Arabic word for “the”.
