To allot is to give a particular share of something limited — time, money, space, seats — to a person or a purpose. A teacher allots twenty minutes for the test. A city allots money to a school. Someone allots you a desk or a room. It is a planning word, a little formal. You allot from a pool that has to be divided; you are not handing out gifts with no limit. Though actually, this word is a famous trap beside a lot, which means “many” or “much” and is two words. They sound close in fast speech, but only allot is the verb for giving someone their share.
