An allegro is a piece of music — or one movement inside a longer piece — meant to be played or sung quickly. You meet the word in classical music more than in pop: a symphony may have several parts, and one of them is “the allegro,” the fast one. Musicians also write allegro on the page as an instruction: play this part fast. It is a classroom and score word, a little special; you would not use it for walking quickly down the street. Though actually, the Italian word first meant “cheerful” or “lively,” not “fast.” The speed meaning grew out of that lively feeling. Some allegro music is bright, but some is simply quick, and not especially happy.
