Allahabad is an old city in north India. It sits where the Ganges and the Yamuna meet — Hindus also speak of a third, hidden river there — and that meeting-place has long been one of the holiest spots in Hindu tradition: a city people travel to for faith, and a site of the great Kumbh Mela gathering. The English name is a Persian-Muslim one, “the city of Allah.” Though actually, the official Indian name was changed in 2018 to Prayagraj, an older name for the same sacred meeting of rivers. Many English books, maps, and older speakers still say Allahabad; newer official Indian writing says Prayagraj. Both can point to the same city. It is a place-name, always capitalised.
