    You use all-time when you compare something with the whole of history, not just this year or this season. An all-time high is the highest it has ever been; an all-time low is the worst or smallest ever; your all-time favourite is the one you still put first after everything you have seen. It almost always sits before a word like high, low, best, greatest, record, or favourite. It is common in sport, pop music, and news about prices. Informal enough for chat, clear enough for headlines. Though actually, the is doing real work: it glues “in the whole of time” onto the next word. Without the , all time is not this meaning.

    all-time 用來把某件事拿來和整個歷史比，意思是有史以來。例如 an all-time high 就是有史以來最高的紀錄，an all-time low 是有史以來最低的，your all-time favourite 則是看過這麼多之後，仍然排第一的那一個。它幾乎都放在 high、low、best、greatest、record、favourite 這類字前面，形成「all-time + 名詞」，常見於運動、流行音樂，還有價格新聞。語氣輕鬆，聊天用得，寫標題也夠清楚。
