All-terrain describes a vehicle built to go where an ordinary car should not: mud, stones, sand, rough tracks, not just a smooth road. You will also see all-terrain tyres, all-terrain bikes, all-terrain shoes — same idea: made for mixed, messy ground. It is a practical word, at home in and outdoor talk. Though actually, “all” is a promise, not a law: they handle many surfaces, not literally every surface. Deep water and ice still win.
