An all-nighter is a night when you do not sleep because you are studying or finishing written work at university. The usual phrase is pull an all-nighter. It is student talk, informal, a bit proud and a bit tired: the paper due at nine, the exam in the morning. It names the night itself, the occasion, not the person who stayed up. School pupils say it too, but campus life is where it belongs. Though actually some people now use it for any night with no sleep — games, a new baby — the university work night is still the core meaning. After one, you are worn out; it is not a healthy plan, only a last-minute one.
組成From all-night + -er: all- + night + -er. The -er turns the all-night stretch into an event, a night of that kind.
