An alkali is a substance that, with an acid, can make a chemical salt. In the school lab, alkalis are the opposite partner of acids: they can cancel an acid’s sharpness, they often feel slippery, and they change the colour of some dyes the other way from acids. Soap-making and strong cleaners use stuff. Scientists also say “base”; alkali is the older chemistry-class word, especially for bases that dissolve in water, such as sodium . Do not taste them, even though old books mention a bitter taste. The word comes from Arabic for the ashes of a salty plant (saltwort). People burned the plant and used the ashes to get the stuff they needed. It is not related to alcohol, though both English words begin with al- from Arabic al-, “the.”
