The Alhambra is a palace — really a palace and fortress together — on a hill above Granada in southeast Spain. Moorish kings had it built between 1238 and 1358. People who care about buildings often call it Spain’s most impressive work in the Moorish style: courtyards, still water, very fine on the walls. You normally say “the Alhambra,” as you would for a famous named place. The name came into English from Spanish, and before that from Arabic; it means “the red (one),” almost certainly from the colour of the earth and the walls. It is a building, not a person, and not a style of music.
