If you eat or sit alfresco, you do it outside, in the open air — at a garden table, on a terrace, or on the pavement in front of a café. English borrowed the word from Italian, and it still sounds a little stylish: you meet it on restaurant signs and in holiday writing more than in ordinary chat. People use it mainly about eating and drinking, though you can also sit alfresco. It does not mean the food itself is fresh; it only tells you where you are. Though actually, in Italian it first meant 'in the cool' — outside was the cool place to sit in hot weather — and English kept the outdoor sense, not the temperature sense.
