ALF here is the Animal Liberation Front: a loosely organised animal-rights group that started in Britain in the 1970s and then appeared in other countries. People in it take direct action they say is for animals — breaking into laboratories or farms, letting animals out, sometimes damaging buildings or equipment. They often work in small groups and do not give their names. Governments and many newspapers have treated ALF actions as crimes, and in some places as terrorism; people who support the group call the same acts rescue. The letters stand for the name; you say them as A-L-F, or sometimes as a little word, alf. This is a political movement, not a mascot.
