Aldermaston is a village in Berkshire, in the south of England. On a map it looks quiet. Its fame is not. Since 1958 the Atomic Weapons Establishment there has been a place where Britain designs and makes nuclear weapons. Because of that, the name became a banner word: from the late 1950s, people who were against nuclear arms walked the Aldermaston Marches, long protest walks tied to that site. If you meet Aldermaston in the news, it is almost always about nuclear weapons, defence work, or protest — not about ordinary village life.
