Alchemists tried to turn ordinary metals into gold and searched for a way to live forever, mixing what we'd now call real science with magic and . Today the word is mostly used in history, fantasy stories, and games, or figuratively for someone who seems to 'magically' turn one thing into something better, like 'a financial alchemist.'
