1. 1

Albion is an old, mostly poetic name for Britain — and, more loosely, sometimes for England. You will not hear it at the airport or on the news as the normal name of the country. You meet it in poems, old history, sports-club names, and in the French political jab Albion ('treacherous Britain'), a bitter nickname from the past. Though actually, it is not the everyday word for the place now; Britain or the UK does that job. Writers reach for Albion when they want an old, almost mythic island, not a modern state. It feels literary, a little grand, and a little dusty.

組成From Middle English Albion, from Latin Albiōn, an ancient Gallo-Latin name for Britain (related to Middle Welsh Albbu and Old Irish Albu), from Proto-Celtic *Albiū. The Celtic word is thought to have meant 'the upper world' (this world, not the underworld). It goes back to Proto-Indo-European *albʰós ('white'), the same old root behind Latin albus ('white') and Greek alphós ('whiteness'). It is often guessed that the Romans heard a link with albus because of the white cliffs of Dover; that is a hypothesis, not a proven naming story.
