Alberta is a province in western Canada — a large piece of the country, not a city. Its capital is Edmonton. On a map it sits between the Rocky Mountains on the west and wide prairie to the east. People far away often meet the name in news about oil, cattle, very cold winters, and, in recent years, big . It is a place-name: you say it the way you say a country or a US state, in a normal voice. Though actually, visitors mix up the two famous cities all the time. Edmonton is the capital; Calgary is the bigger city many know first. Alberta is also a girl's given name, which is how the place got the word — that is a person's name, not a second meaning of the province. Albertan is the usual word for someone from there.
