Alamogordo is a town in the US state of New Mexico, in the dry southwest. Students meet it in history because, nearby in 1945, the United States set off the first nuclear bomb. That test is often called Trinity. It was a test in the desert, not a bomb dropped on a city — Hiroshima came later, in war. Though actually the explosion was not inside the town; Alamogordo is simply the place on the map people name when they tell the story. The Spanish name is usually taken as “fat ”: álamo, a tree, plus gordo, fat or big.
