In the United Kingdom, Akela is the adult who leads a pack of Cub Scouts — the younger children in the Scout family. The children call that leader Akela, as if it were a name and a job at once. The word was borrowed from Kipling's Jungle Book, where Akela is the lone wolf who heads the pack; the man who started Scouting loved that book and lifted its names. The original word in Hindi and , akelā, means alone. So the title carries a story: the leader who stands a little apart, watching the pack. In the United States, Cub Scout adults more often have titles like Den Leader or Cubmaster, so this use is especially British and Commonwealth. It is not a wolf in the hall — though actually, that is exactly where the name began.
