Aka (also written a.k.a. or AKA) stands for also known as. You put it between a main name and another name the same person or thing goes by: a writer's pen name, a thief's street name, a company's trading name, a song's other title. Newspapers, police reports, and the internet use it constantly. It is handy and a little informal; in a very careful essay you might write the three words out in full. You can read it letter by letter, A-K-A, which is the usual way, or run it together. It does not mean the second name is fake — only that it is the other label people use. There is a different, rarer word aka from Māori, meaning a kind of vine; that is not this one.
