Ajax is a warrior in the old Greek stories of the War, the ones Homer tells in the Iliad. He fights on Agamemnon's side — the Greek side. People remember him as huge and brave: he carries a shield like a wall, and he stands up to Hector, Troy's greatest fighter, more than once. There were actually two Greek heroes called Ajax; the one with the great shield is Ajax the Greater, son of Telamon. He is not the clever of the army — that is — and later stories say Ajax took his own life after a bitter quarrel over armour. The name still turns up on a famous Dutch football club, on a household cleaner, and as a computer term written AJAX; those later uses borrowed the look of the name, or made a new word from English initials. This entry is the man in the poem.
