The airwaves are radio and television as a place where programmes travel — not the set in your living room, but the “out there” that carries the show. A song hits the airwaves; a politician dominates the airwaves; a station takes to the airwaves. It is almost always plural in this meaning. The picture underneath is radio signals moving as through the air; we kept the picture and dropped the physics. It is a colourful, slightly old newspaper word. Younger people more often say on TV, on the radio, or just online. Though actually, writers do stretch it toward any broadcast, and some now push it onto podcasts, which is looser than the original radio-and-TV picture. You will still meet it in headlines and in talk about who controls public attention.
組成air + waves. The idea is radio waves travelling through the air. This sense lives in the plural.
