An airliner is a large plane that carries passengers on regular flights — the kind you board with a ticket and a seat number. It is the machine, not the company. The company is an airline; you sit in the airliner. A cargo plane, a fighter plane, and a little private jet are not airliners: the word wants something big, with many seats, flying a route. In everyday talk people often just say plane or flight; airliner sounds a little more like a or a textbook. Though actually, the liner piece is the same idea as an ocean liner: a large vehicle on a regular line, not a lining inside a coat, and not a person who draws lines.
