An airdrop is the act of sending food, medicine, or other supplies to people by letting them fall from a plane, often by parachute. You hear it when roads are closed: war, floods, mountains, a town that planes can reach but trucks cannot. It is both a thing you can name (an airdrop of food) and a thing you can do (to airdrop supplies). The verb is common in news: they airdropped water to the village. It feels a little military or official, but aid groups use it too. People also stretch the idea: in Taiwan, AirDrop is what many people call Apple’s way of sending files from one phone to another — that is a brand use of the same picture (something travelling through the air), not boxes falling from a plane.
