The aircrew are the people whose job is to fly the plane: the pilot, and anyone else who helps fly it — often a co-pilot, and on some planes a navigator or engineer. The heart of the word is flying the machine, not looking after the passengers. Cabin crew (the people who bring food and keep you safe in the back) are a different team, though speakers do stretch aircrew to mean everyone who works on the flight, cabin staff included. In careful talk, especially military and news talk, aircrew stays with the flying team. It is a group word: one person is a member of the aircrew, not “an aircrew” in the way you might say “a pilot.” Neutral, a little technical.
