An airbag is a hidden bag in a car — often in the steering wheel, the , or the side of the seat — that fills with gas in a crash and makes a soft cushion, so your head and chest do not hit the hard parts of the car. You do not see it until it goes off, and after it has gone off it is finished: someone has to replace it. Newer cars often have several, not just one in front. It is an everyday safety word, not a fancy one. People sometimes stretch it to the same idea in other vehicles, but the home of the word is the car. It is not a bag you sit on or pack for a trip.
