Aimlessness is the noun: the state of having no clear purpose. It is a more abstract, slightly heavier word than . Writers use it for a mood or a stretch of life — the aimlessness of the long summer, the aimlessness he felt after the job ended. It does not mean by itself; a busy person can still feel it, if none of the busy-ness points anywhere. Built from plus -ness. You will meet it more in essays and novels than in everyday talk. In conversation people more often say “I don’t know what I’m doing” than “I feel aimlessness”.
