Ahoy is a sailors’ call: you shout it to get another ship’s attention, or to greet someone on the water. Ship ahoy! means “I see a ship.” Ahoy there! is “hello” across the . On land it sounds old-fashioned or playful — people use it as a joke, or in pirate stories. You would not normally greet a this way unless you were being funny. It has been a sea greeting for hundreds of years.

組成a- + hoy. Hoy was an old call sailors used when they pulled ropes, and as a greeting from the 1300s. Dutch has a similar call, hoi.
