    An agronomist is a person who studies how crops grow — soil, seeds, water, weather, plant disease — and how to grow food well without wrecking the land. The science is agronomy; the -ist makes the person. The study itself is not called agronomist. Agronomists often work with farmers, universities, or government. It is a professional, scientific word, not a word for anyone who farms. A farmer grows the crop; an agronomist studies the system that makes the crop grow. From agronomy + -ist.
