An agnostic is someone who says we cannot know whether God exists. They are not saying "there is no God" — that is an atheist — and they are not saying "there is a God." They are saying the question sits outside what people can prove, so they will not claim either side. The word was built in the 1800s from Greek pieces meaning "not" and "knowing." It is a calm, slightly formal word, at home in serious talk about belief. You can use it as a noun ("She is an agnostic") or as an adjective ("an agnostic position"). Though actually, people now stretch it: a "platform-agnostic" program does not care which computer system you use. That later meaning borrows the "I will not pick a side" feeling, but it has nothing to do with God.
