    Age-old means something has been around for a very long time — so long that people talk as if it belongs to the ages. It sits before a noun: an age-old custom, an age-old problem, an age-old question. It is a warm, slightly story-like word, not a science term. Though actually, speakers sometimes stick it on things only a few decades old, just to make them sound deep. It does not mean “for old people” or “about old age.”
