Agate is a hard stone. Cut it open and you often see bands — stripes of different colours, brown, white, red, grey, stacked in layers. People use it in jewellery, beads, and small things. It is a real rock, a kind of quartz, not a brand name. Though actually, shop “agate” is sometimes cheap stone that has been to look ; jewellers mean the natural stone. Everyday English may just say a pretty stone unless someone is naming the type. This is not the old, rare adverb agate (“on the way”), which is a different word that only looks the same.
