Agar is a jelly-like substance made from . Cooks use it as a vegetarian substitute for in desserts, because is normally made from animal bones and skin. But most students actually meet this word in science class, because agar is also used to make a soft, jelly-like layer in a small dish (a petri dish) where scientists grow bacteria to study them.
