1. 1

Agamemnon is not a job or a type of king. It is one man's name, always with a capital letter. In old Greek stories he is king of and the leader of the Greeks in the long war against Troy. He is powerful, though actually the stories do not make him gentle: he can be proud and hard, and he even gives up his own daughter so the ships can sail. After the war he comes home, and his wife and her lover Aegisthus murder him. Students meet him in the Iliad and in later plays. We do not use the name as everyday English for “a boss” or “a commander.”
