Aftercare is care or treatment that comes after the main event is over. After hospital, aftercare is the help you get once you go home: visits, medicine, exercises, someone checking you are healing. After prison, aftercare is the help that follows release — a place to sleep, work, people who keep in touch, so life outside does not fall apart. You also hear it after a tattoo, hair dye, or an operation at a clinic: the looking-after that comes next. Shops sometimes call extra help after you buy something “aftercare” too. The shared idea is care that follows. Though actually, in American school English, aftercare often means the club that looks after children when the school day ends. In Britain that is usually an after-school club, and aftercare still sounds like hospital or prison. So always look at who is speaking.
