An after-effect is a result that stays on after the first thing has finished — and when people use this word, they usually mean a bad result. A strong flu can have after-effects: you are still tired weeks later. Medicine, an operation, a crash, or a shock can leave after-effects too. You will see it in doctors' English and in the news. People sometimes stretch it to any leftover result, not only a harmful one, but a pleasant leftover taste is more often called an . You may see after-effect with a or aftereffect as one word; both are used. Though actually, After Effects with capital letters is the name of a computer program for video. That is a brand, not this noun, and it confuses students all the time.
後遺症指第一件事結束後還留下來的結果，通常是不好的結果。重感冒之後，人可能好幾週還是很累，例句是「A strong flu can have after-effects: you are still tired weeks later.」藥物、手術、車禍或驚嚇也都可能留下後遺症。有時人們會把它用在任何剩下的結果上，但好的餘味通常另有說法。寫法上可以寫成 after-effect，也可以寫成 aftereffect，兩種都常見。另外有一個大寫的影片特效軟體名字，指的是製作影片的程式，跟這個名詞沒有關係。
