An Afrikaner is a white South African whose first language is . Most Afrikaner families go back to Dutch from the 1600s, with some French and German families mixed in. This is not the same as African — an African is anyone from the continent of Africa. It is also not the same as , which is the language. And it is not a word for every white South African: some white families speak English at home and do not call themselves Afrikaners. Older English used for some of these families; meant “farmer” and points more to the old farming states than to every Afrikaner now. The name carries heavy history, because Afrikaner leaders once ran the old system that kept Black and white people apart by law. Use it as a name for this people, calmly and exactly.
