When something is afire, it is burning — there are flames on it. You use it after words like be or set: “The roof was afire.” “They set the boat afire.” It means the same as on fire, and though actually most people today just say on fire, you will still meet afire in stories and in slightly careful writing. People also use it when there is no real fire at all: if someone is afire with anger or afire with ideas, that feeling is burning inside them. It is not a verb. You cannot “afire” a thing; you set it afire, or it is afire.
