Aetiology is the study of what causes a disease — and, in doctors' English, often the cause itself. A paper may discuss the aetiology of a fever, meaning what started this. It is a formal medical and academic word, much more at home in a hospital report than in a family conversation. British spelling keeps the ae; American spelling etiology. The pieces are aetio- (cause) and -logy (the study of a field), borrowed through Latin from Greek. Though actually, outside medicine you may still meet it for the cause of any condition, or even of a social problem; that stretch is real, but the centre of gravity is illness.
