In shops and bathrooms, an aerosol is the small metal can you press: liquid sits inside with gas, and a button sends it out as a fine spray. Hair spray, some insect sprays, spray paint, and some asthma work this way. People also say spray can when they want to be extra clear. Though actually, scientists use aerosol for the spray itself — the tiny drops or bits floating in the air — even when no can is involved, like sea spray, smoke, or some dirty air. That is why the word is built as air + solution. On a label, though, it almost always means the can. There is a verb too, less common in daily talk: to aerosol something is to spray it this way. One can, two or three aerosols if you are counting tins.
組成aero- (air) + sol, short for solution (a liquid with something dissolved in it). Named for a solution sent into the air as tiny drops; the can then took the same name.
