You will almost always meet this word in one set phrase: under the aegis of someone. It means that person or group is protecting you, backing you, or letting you work under their name. A science fair under the aegis of the university is not merely happening near the university — the university is standing behind it. The word feels official, a little dressed-up; newspapers, universities, and formal notices like it. In ordinary talk people say with the support of or backed by, and they sound more like themselves. Though actually, the tidy modern meaning (support, sponsorship) is already a stretch from the old story. In Greek myth the aegis was a goatskin shield, the one the goddess carried. English kept the idea of a shield in front of you and mostly dropped the goat. You rarely hear the word outside that under the aegis of pattern.
組成English borrowed the whole word from Latin aegis, which had borrowed it from Greek aigís — first a goatskin, then the shield of Athena. The Greek word for goat is probably hiding in the first part. It does not split into English pieces.
