An adze is a tool for shaping wood. It looks a little like an axe, but the blade is turned the other way: it sits across the handle, not in line with it, so when you swing, the sharp edge comes down flat to the wood and scoops or shaves rather than chops. For a very long time this was how a person hollowed a log into a boat or flattened a beam before machines did that work. You will mostly meet the word in museums, history books, or among people who still work wood by hand.
