An adversary is a person, a team, or a country you are fighting or competing against. It is more formal, and a little more serious, than opponent. In sport, most people say opponent; adversary makes the other side sound more like an enemy, even when the fight is only a match or a court case. You can respect an adversary. The word does not always mean they are wicked — only that they stand across from you. Though actually, older religious English also uses “the Adversary,” with a capital A, as a name for Satan, the . That is a special Bible use, not the everyday one. Do not mix this with adversity: an adversary is someone; adversity is hard times.
組成From Middle English adversarie, from Anglo-Norman aversaire and Old French aversier, aversaire (French adversaire), from Latin adversārius, from adversus (“turned toward”). By the look of the English pieces: adverse + -ary. The biblical name is a different story: Satan comes from Hebrew שָׂטָן (Śāṭān), “adversary, accuser.”
