The advent of something is the time when it first arrives and starts to be widely used. We almost always say the advent of… — the advent of the internet, the advent of cheap air travel. It is a slightly grand, written word. In speech, people more often say when it arrived or when it became common. It is not the same as adventure, even though the two look like cousins: advent is about something arriving, not about a risky trip. With a capital A, Advent is also the Christian season of about four weeks before Christmas, when churches wait for the birth of Jesus. In news and essays, though, the small-a advent is the one you will meet: a big change turning up and spreading. You rarely say an advent on its own; the of-phrase is the natural shape.
