If someone is adroit, they are clever and skilful, especially in talk and in tight social moments — the person who answers a hard question without making anyone angry, or who turns an argument without looking as if they have ducked it. You meet it in news and books about politics, law, and careful manners more than in the playground. It is a dressy, slightly French-feeling adjective; in ordinary speech people more often say clever, skilful, sharp, or good with words. Though actually, the older picture behind it is “good with the right hand”: French à droit, “to the right,” because most people work more neatly with that hand. So adroit can still describe skilful hands, but learner English leans on the words-and-arguments sense. It is a compliment with a cool edge — skill, not warmth.
