The Admiralty was the British government office that ran the navy: the ships, the sailors, and the war at sea. For a long time, if Britain needed a fleet, this was the department that decided. An admiral is a person — a high navy officer. The Admiralty is the office around those officers, not the person. The word is British and rather formal. You meet it in history, in talk about the Royal Navy, and in older books. Britain later folded that old office into a larger defence ministry, but people still say “the Admiralty” for that naval government. Though actually, if you know Hong Kong, Admiralty is also a place name: it comes from the old British naval base there, so the same navy-office word became a district on the map. Singapore has a similar story around the old base at Sembawang. It has nothing to do with admire or ; those come from a different root.
